Van Vliet earned a B.S. in forest products (1952) and an M.S. in wood science (1958) from Oregon State College and a Ph. D. in forest products from Michigan State University (1970). Van Vliet taught in OSU's School of Forestry from 1955 to 1990, and from 1963-1971 was also a forest products extension specialist. The first forestry class was taught at OSU in 1896 and ten years later the first four-year degree program was established.
